Shawn Oliver Teaching Philosophy

My playing career was cut short due to a shoulder injury and that drives me to help kids understand that their identity isn't tied through the game. Too often these young men tie their self-esteem into success and failure and I always strive to help them be mentally tough enough to not ride the roller coaster of emotions.

Baseball is a game that when fundamentals are the root of an athlete, success will often come with it and as a coach, my job is to continue to develop the fundamentals while instilling confidence that'll carry them into games and their life as they continue to grow as men. Understanding that failure is just another opportunity to grow, my job is developing that growth mindset that will take these boys a long way in the game. Practice should be harder than the competition, that's how we grow as athletes. My favorite thing is asking an athlete "WHY", if they can understand the why of a play that tells me they are locked in and in sync with what's happening around them.

As a coach, I'm constantly learning and seeking out new opportunities to grow so I can model that behavior to my student-athlete. If I want them to be their best, I need to be my best.
